“When I was nine years old I was sold as a child bride.”
– Leah
When Leah and Ben went to the orphanage after losing their parents to illness, they found comfort in facing their frightening new world together. That comfort was shattered when Ben awoke one morning to find his sister gone. Frantically he searched, only to hear that she had been sold as a child bride to a family far away. She was nine years old.
Ben’s grief at losing his little sister intensified when he was also sold as a laborer to an automotive factory. Days, filled with the stench of rubber and oil, melted into nights of wondering where she was. When Project 365 found him, his first concern was that they also find and rescue Leah. When they were reunited after a daring confrontation, Leah was glad Ben never stopped looking for her. “I thank God that I was rescued before anything really bad happened.”
Alone no more, Leah and Ben were strengthened to pursue their dreams. Soon Leah will graduate, and Ben has found work as a skilled tradesman. Freedom for them means family; someone who shares their hopes. Freedom means they’re no longer alone.
