Molly had no memory of her parents, who had died when she was small. For most of her 11 years, it had just been her and Grandma. Now, suddenly, Grandma no longer wanted her. She could hear her in the next room making plans with the village schoolmaster. He needed someone young and strong to haul coal, and Grandma needed one less burden.
